The government has announced that a digital driving licence will launch in the UK later this year.

The licence will be available in a Gov.uk Wallet and will make use of security features that are built into modern phones and will provide drivers with the convenience of not being required to carry a physical licence with them on the road.

Introducing digital licences will also reduce the risk of them being lost, stolen or forged, with access to the Wallet requiring security checks such as facial recognitions.

The digital system is due to go live this summer, with further features such as applying for road tax and viewing information on MOTs also being added.
