The upcoming Road Safety Strategy will include new measures to tackle the issue of car headlight glare on UK roads, according to the BBC.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is set to announce fresh data in support of the measures, following its announcement last year to commission independent research conducted between October 2024 and Spring 2025.

Modern LED headlights produce a brighter and more focused white beam in comparison to older halogen lamps. While improving visibility, the new headlights also often dazzle others on the road, which can lead to accidents.

The research investigated factors such as surrounding vehicles, weather conditions and ambient lighting to develop a thorough understanding of the circumstances that result in high brightness levels and glare.

A new study by the DfT has revealed that 97% of UK drivers are either regularly or sometimes distracted by oncoming vehicles, with 96% stating that most or some headlights were too bright.

The rise in the number of drivers experiencing headlight glare is concerning, as a lack of clear vision ahead while driving at nighttime could significantly increase the risk of an incident.

AX can provide end-to-end services to ensure drivers stay mobile in the event of an incident. AX’s network of expert bodyshops are trained for repairs on all powertrains, and like-for-like replacement vehicles can be provided for those whose car needs to come off the road, including EVs.
