A fifth of UK drivers have been found to avoid MOTs and use faulty tyres to cut down on costs according to a survey by RAC.
The poll discovered that 20% of motorists below the age of 44 are breaking the law by neglecting the safety of their vehicles, with one in 10 drivers of any age being guilty of at least one infringement.
Cars in the UK are required to have an MOT after three years on the road, then annually until a vehicle reaches 40 years old when it becomes exempt.
While the maximum charge for an MOT is capped at £54.85, it is often the repairs required to pass that can be costly. The procedure assesses a number of different vehicle parts such as tyres, brakes, lights and seatbelts. Tyres must meet specific requirements, such as tread depth, at all times to be considered legal.
Official figures show that 9.9 million (22.6%) out of 43.7 million MOTs in the UK conducted last year ended in failure. Lights and signalling were the most common cause (19.9%) of a failed MOT, followed by suspension (13%) and brakes (10%), with poor tyre condition being the fourth most common reason at 4.4%.
Along with avoiding MOTs, 19% of drivers surveyed also admitted to delaying necessary repairs, as well as reducing or entirely stopping the servicing of their vehicles due to cost.
Carrying out necessary safety checks, maintenance and repairs is vital because it will prevent more costly corrective work further down the line.
