Drivers have been warned to expect significant congestion across the UK this week as many head home for Christmas.
A record 23.7 million people are predicted to hit the roads on Friday 20th December, according to The AA – the highest since records began at The AA in 2010. Saturday 21st and Monday 23rd will also see historically high traffic, potentially reaching 22.7 million trips.
Whilst Friday is expected to be the busiest day on UK roads, three fifths (58%) of drivers will be travelling less than 50 miles, with 7% of those surveyed predicted to travel up to 100 miles, and 1% over 400 miles.
Amber warnings have been issued ahead of the Christmas break as poor weather is also expected to contribute to congestion.
Despite the 25th being the quietest day of the year on UK roads, breakdowns and incidents are still anticipated; in 2023, over 2,400 breakdowns were reported on Christmas Day alone.
