Why am I being asked to claim on my own insurance policy? It’s not my fault.

In some cases, the circumstances and evidence surrounding the accident mean it is difficult to attribute liability to a particular party.  You have a legal obligation to mitigate your losses (i.e. not incur significant costs when liability is unclear). One way of doing this is to claim on your own policy.
